Argentina is moving forward with its new Citizenship by Investment Program. The government has now announced investment amounts, options for family members, and plans to begin accepting applications in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Argentina has taken another major step toward implementing its new Citizenship by Investment Program, creating a new pathway for foreign investors interested in obtaining Argentine citizenship.

On October 2, 2026, during Argentina Week in Paris, Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Chief of Cabinet Diego Santilli announced new details about the program, including specific financial requirements and options for qualifying family members.

Until now, Argentine law had already introduced the concept of citizenship based on a “relevant investment,” but many of the practical details remained undefined.

The latest government announcement provides a much clearer picture of how the program is expected to work.

How much will you need to invest?

According to the official announcement, the program will offer two alternatives for the principal applicant:

Option 1 — USD 350,000 contribution to the Argentine National Treasury

This contribution will be non-refundable.

Option 2 — USD 800,000 investment in a government security

Applicants will be able to subscribe to a public security specifically created for the Citizenship by Investment Program.

This is an important distinction for potential investors: the newly announced program is not simply based on purchasing real estate or making any private investment in Argentina.

The government has announced specific financial mechanisms for participating in the program.

Can your family obtain Argentine citizenship too?

Yes.

The program is expected to allow the principal applicant to include certain family members, subject to proof of the family relationship and additional financial contributions.

According to the government announcement:

* A spouse may be included with an additional USD 100,000 contribution.

* Children between 18 and 25 years old, provided they are unmarried and have no children, may be included for USD 100,000 each.

* Children under 18 may be included for USD 25,000 each.

For example, the Argentine government stated that a family consisting of a principal applicant, a spouse, and two minor children could apply through Treasury contributions totaling USD 500,000.

Do you need to live in Argentina for two years?

This is one of the most significant aspects of the new program.

Under Argentina’s traditional naturalization process, foreign nationals generally need to establish the required period of residence before applying for citizenship.

The investment pathway is different.

Changes introduced to Argentina’s citizenship legislation allow foreign nationals who make a qualifying “relevant investment” to seek naturalization regardless of the length of their residence in Argentina.

For international investors—particularly business owners, entrepreneurs, and individuals who travel frequently—this represents a fundamentally different pathway to Argentine citizenship.

Does investing automatically guarantee citizenship?

No.

Meeting the financial requirement should not be understood as purchasing or automatically receiving an Argentine passport.

Applicants will be subject to a formal government review process.

According to the Argentine government, the program will incorporate enhanced due diligence, financial transparency, anti-money-laundering controls, and risk assessment procedures.

Funds will also need to enter Argentina through the formal financial system and comply with applicable regulations regarding the origin and traceability of funds.

Argentina’s regulatory framework provides for checks involving several government agencies before a citizenship application can ultimately be approved.

For this reason, an applicant’s background, source of funds, documentation, and overall eligibility will be just as important as meeting the financial threshold.

When will Argentina’s Citizenship by Investment Program begin?

According to the government’s October 2026 announcement, the program is expected to begin receiving applications during the fourth quarter of 2026.

Further operational rules will still be important.

These should clarify issues such as the application procedure, required documentation, financial compliance requirements, processing stages, and the practical implementation of each investment option.

Anyone considering this route should therefore distinguish between the program announced by the government and an application process that is already fully operational.

Why could this be attractive to U.S. investors?

For U.S. citizens and residents considering an international investment or a long-term connection with Argentina, the new program introduces an alternative that did not previously exist in this form.

Argentina offers access to South America, a large domestic market, opportunities across sectors including energy, technology, agriculture, real estate and natural resources, and—under the new framework—a potential pathway to citizenship without first completing the ordinary two-year residence period.

However, obtaining another citizenship can have significant legal, tax, financial, and estate-planning implications, particularly for U.S. persons.

The citizenship strategy and the investment strategy should therefore be evaluated together with the appropriate legal and tax professionals before funds are transferred.
